The importance of a great business card design

We’ve said it before, but we’ll stress it again – a great deal of importance is placed in business cards by owners, largely because their aim is to reduce the essence of their brand into as minimal a form as is possible. A good business card will tell others all that they need to know about you and your business in seconds by being simple, clear and visually appealing.

Balancing these 3 factors can be an incredibly difficult task, especially when dealing with complex business models. Our job is to encapsulate all that you and your company stand for in a readily digestible format – and we pride ourselves on this achievement.

The significance of business cards isn’t lost on the young either. In the era of The Apprentice, it’s a growing trend for budding entrepreneurs to order free sample batches from a variety of websites so that they may distribute them freely when networking in the playground!

Given the size and cost of the items, it can be argued that they’re the most integral part of any good marketing plan, allowing companies and their staff to take control of their own image. Essentially, they allow carriers to premeditate the all-important first impression that they will make on clients by presenting them with a memorable professional image. In this sense, they are just as important as your own personal appearance.

Because of their importance, we put a lot of thought into tailoring the designs of each card, so that they best reflect your business and the manner in which you do it. A truly eye catching design might feature traditional African dashiki colours and patterns, for example, but unless you’re a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo we’d advise against this theme!

The first aspect of a potential card to consider is its overall style. Basic cards offer the classic black and white look, ideal for when utility is what your business calls for. Classy and uncluttered, these truly allow your words to speak for themselves.

The incorporation of images into picture cards, meanwhile, means that they tend to be extremely memorable. The old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words also applies and they can be used effectively to illustrate products and services.

Tactile cards tend to be much more expensive than the above, but the cost is often worth it for those who truly want to stand out. They can be produced using a variety of non-standard materials from metal to wood, and the physical, unexpected sensation of receiving them is often incredibly memorable.

As their name suggests, multi-purpose cards serve duel purposes and often contain all the usual information associated with a business while adding that which recipients may find useful, e.g., maps pointing the way to operating locations. Multi-purpose cards are defined by their content rather than form.

The possibilities when designing a card’s overall style are practically limitless provided you’re willing to pay for artisan service. Most designers and printers, ourselves included, will be willing to consult with you so that your needs are met as fully as possible. After this, it’s just a matter of determining the cards’ weight, finish and quantity before you place your order and start to get your name out there!
